Owner of Cocothe to Open Sewickley Tavern At Site Of Former Bruneaux

Fans of the recently closed fine-dining destination Cocothé needn’t worry: they will be able to indulge again soon when the restaurant’s owner-chef team open a new spot just down the street. The new restaurant will be called Sewickley Tavern and will feature a tavern-style menu. It will be situated at 409 Beaver Street in the space of the former Bruneaux restaurant.

After collecting accolades at Cocothé including Pittsburgh Magazine’s Best Restaurant in 2018, owner Courtney Yates and Executive Chef Dave DeVoss were ready to try something new. “We had a great time challenging ourselves to do something special at Cocothé and we did it,” said Yates, “Now, we want to have some fun with a menu that’s really friendly and accessible.”

The new restaurant will take traditional tavern food to a higher level, including standards like potato skins and wings but adding options such as burrata salad, housemade soups, beer battered crab cakes, and jambalaya. Fresh ingredients will be featured with an emphasis on quality and taste. Diners may well expect good things from Chef Dave DeVoss, whose carefully-plated creations at Cocothé were highly-praised by local critics, and “recommended for foodies” by Open Table users. DeVoss is passionate that every dish he serves must eat well, saying, “The menu might look familiar, but this is not going to be your average dining experience. We care so much about every plate of food we serve, and we want to blow people away with how good tavern food can be.”

Yates and DeVoss have tapped Sewickley-based architecture firm Studio St.Germain to undertake a full renovation of the former Bruneaux space to meet their needs. Yates’s interior design work at Cocothé garnered the 2017 Delicious Design award from Pittsburgh Magazine. Says Yates, “I’m looking forward to creating an environment where people feel at ease, welcome, and excited to spend time here when they step in the door.”

The new restaurant is expected to open in early fall.
