Broadside Terrace
Although the history of the Sewickley Public Library goes back more than 150 years, its current location, between Broad and Thorn, dates to 1923. Designed by Henry Gilchrist, the Sewickley Public Library achieved historic landmark distinction in 2023. A beloved cultural centerpiece of Allegheny County, the library is a popular destination for children and adults across the region.
In keeping with its vision as a lively community resource, the Sewickley Public Library board decided to upgrade its exterior grounds. The result is the Broadside Terrace, a graceful new outdoor space for learning, socializing, and relaxing. Along with EK Smith Landscape Design, Studio St. Germain transformed a previously weatherworn exterior into a vibrant gathering spot, with new limestone walkways, new garden beds, new landscaping throughout, new lighting, and a renovation of the existing structures, including the outdoor patio.
A new courtyard for readings, gatherings, and events is one of the main features of this renovation/addition project. Located in the architectural cutout facing Broad Street, the courtyard is paved with limestone and is connected to the patio by a pathway and a ramp. Because the building is a historic landmark, Studio St. Germain consulted with the Historic Review Commission to obtain a Certificate of Appropriateness for the design.
As the oldest continuously used library in Allegheny County, the Sewickley Public Library has a treasured past; its new, carefully planned exterior promises a thriving future.
