Calgary Residence II
The majestic Canadian Rockies serve as an inspiring background for this stylish 12,000-square- foot residence on a lush hilltop in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The owners emphasized their strong connection to the landscape as well as a love of Arts and Crafts style, and these influences led to a design concept that highlights timeless, rustic aesthetics.
The Calgary Residence II is notable for is asymmetrical design, its earth tone palette–to correspond to the natural beauty of the rugged surroundings–and its use of organic materials. Similarly, its fieldstone and wood facade offer a textured, pastoral look that complements the landscape. The east elevation faces a courtyard nestled into the foothill and provides a sense of shelter against the severe winter weather. The west elevation opens up to the spectacular view of the mountains. The extensive glass of the west facade, the linear arrangement of rooms, and the placement of the wings ensure a view from every major space in the house, giving the occupants a feeling of being one with nature.
